Nerja and Frigiliana: Balcón de Europa, cave and white village

By deinSpanien editorial team · Updated on 01.10.2026 · 4 min read

In short: Nerja and Frigiliana are only a few kilometres apart and fit nicely into one day: the stalactite cave in the morning, the beach and Balcón de Europa at midday, the white mountain village in the late afternoon. The cave opens at 9:15 am, and if you get there early you will have it almost to yourself.

At a glance

  • Best time: April to June and September to October
  • Duration: one full day for both places
  • Cave: daily from 9:15 am, prices in the official ticket shop
  • Getting there: bus from Málaga or car via the A-7, a regular bus runs between Nerja and Frigiliana
  • Bring: swimwear, sturdy shoes for Frigiliana, a light jacket for the cave

What can you see in Nerja?

Nerja is a seaside resort that has kept its low white houses. The centre is small and ends at the sea.

  • Balcón de Europa: a viewing terrace on a rocky outcrop in the middle of town, with views along the coast in both directions.
  • Playa de Calahonda: the small cove right below it, reached by a staircase.
  • Playa de Burriana: the big beach on the eastern edge of town, with beach restaurants and kayak rental.

Which coves in the area are worth it is covered in Costa del Sol beaches.

What do you need to know about the Cueva de Nerja?

The cave is in the Maro district, a few kilometres east of the centre. It was discovered in 1959 and consists of huge chambers full of stalactites and stalagmites.

This information comes from the official website (as of October 2026):

  • Normal hours: 9:15 am to 4:30 pm, last entry 3:30 pm.
  • High season (June to September, Christmas, Holy Week, long weekends): 9:15 am to 5:30 pm, last entry 4:30 pm.
  • Closed: 1 January, 6 January, 15 May and 25 December.
  • Parking: The car park at the cave charges by the minute (0.030 euros per minute for the first 90 minutes).

At the time of our research, admission prices were only listed in the online shop. Check there and, in high season, book a time slot in advance: entradas.cuevadenerja.es.

What awaits you in Frigiliana?

Frigiliana sits on the mountainside above Nerja and is considered one of the most beautiful white villages in Andalusia. The old Moorish quarter is called Barribarto: steep lanes with patterned pebble paving, white walls, blue doors. Ceramic panels on the walls tell the story of the Morisco uprising in the 16th century.

The village still produces cane honey (miel de caña) today. At the end of August, Frigiliana celebrates the Festival of the Three Cultures with a market and music. We present more villages like this in White villages.

Can you go hiking here?

Yes. Nerja and Frigiliana lie on the edge of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park. The best known route is the river hike in the Río Chíllar, where you walk through a gorge in shallow water. In recent years, access has at times been closed or restricted. Ask at the Nerja tourist office about the current situation before you go.

From Frigiliana, a steep path leads up the local mountain, El Fuerte, with views all the way to the sea.

How do you plan the day?

The order decides whether you end up standing in a queue.

  1. Morning: the cave

Be there when it opens at 9:15 am. The coaches arrive later.

  2. Midday: Nerja

Balcón de Europa, a stroll through town, swimming and lunch at Playa de Burriana.

  3. Late afternoon: Frigiliana

When the day visitors leave and the light softens, the lanes are at their most beautiful.

Tip: In Frigiliana, park in the car park at the entrance to the village or take the regular bus from Nerja. The lanes of the old quarter are closed to cars.

How do you get there?

Nerja has no train station. Buses run from Málaga; you can find the timetable on the ALSA website. By car, take the toll free A-7 heading east. This trip is one of the classic day trips from Málaga and can also be done from Granada via the Costa Tropical.

Many newcomers from Northern Europe live around Nerja. How the area holds up as a place to live is shown in the comparison in Where in Spain?.
