In short: the province of Jaén is rural inland Andalusia: endless olive groves, Renaissance towns and very low housing costs. It suits people who want to live cheaply and authentically and who speak good Spanish or want to learn it.

Who is Jaén right for?
- Good: if you want to live on little money: in Baeza rent costs 5.6 € per square metre (Idealista, September 2026).
- Good: remote workers looking for peace and everyday Spanish life instead of an expat bubble.
- Good: nature lovers, because the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park is on the doorstep.
- Good: students at the Universidad de Jaén with campuses in Jaén and Linares, see Studying in Jaén.
- Less so: if you don’t speak Spanish, because English hardly helps in everyday life and few foreigners live here.
- Less so: if you need the sea, because the coast is several hours away by car.
- Less so: if you are looking for a local job without Spanish and industry contacts.

Working
Jaén lives from olive oil: the province is one of the most important growing regions in the world, and the harvest from November to January shapes the economy and the calendar. On top of that come the public sector, the university, healthcare, retail and some industry in Linares and Andújar. The unemployment rate is 15.2 % (INE, EPA, Q2 2026), and well-paid jobs for newcomers are rare. Jaén is realistic above all with a remote job, a pension or your own self-employment, for example in tourism around Úbeda, Baeza and Cazorla. More on this: Working in Spain and Autónomo.
Everyday life: climate, health, schools, transport
- Climate: more continental than on the coast: in July average highs are 33.7 °C, in January 12.1 °C, and just under 500 mm of rain falls a year, mainly from October to April (AEMET, Jaén station, normal values). In Úbeda, Baeza and Cazorla there is frost in winter.
- Health: the main hospital is the Hospital Universitario de Jaén, plus the Hospital San Agustín in Linares, the Hospital San Juan de la Cruz in Úbeda and the Hospital Alto Guadalquivir in Andújar. More in Health insurance.
- Schools: there is no German or international school in the province; children attend Spanish schools. See with your family.
- Transport: Jaén has no airport of its own; the nearest is Granada-Jaén airport, and for more direct flights you go to Málaga or Seville. Rail is weak: since 6 September 2026, because of construction work, buses have been replacing trains between Jaén and Almuradiel towards Madrid, and replacement buses also run between Jaén and Córdoba. Buses connect the towns with each other and with Granada; in the countryside you need a car.

Typical mistakes
- Underestimating the winter: many old buildings are barely insulated, and without good heating it gets cold indoors.
- Buying an old-town house in Úbeda or Baeza without knowing the heritage protection rules for renovation.
- Arriving without Spanish and expecting authorities, doctors or landlords to speak English.
- Relying on the train, even though the connections to Madrid and Córdoba are currently replaced by buses.
