In short: La Gomera is a small, green and steep Canary Island with a national park, few towns and a lot of peace and quiet. It suits you if you work remotely or are retired and can do without a big city, a wide choice of everything and a fast-moving housing market.
At a glance
- Population: 22,442 on the whole island, of which 9,574 in San Sebastián de La Gomera (INE, as of 1.1.2025)
- Rent: no island figure, Idealista publishes no data for La Gomera. For comparison, the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 15.3 € per m² (Idealista, September 2026)
- Purchase price: no island figure. Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 3,514 € per m² (Idealista, September 2026)
- Climate: mild and dry on the coast, 20.5 °C annual average, around 180 mm of rain a year (AEMET, La Gomera Airport station, 1991 to 2020)
- Airport: Aeropuerto de La Gomera near Playa Santiago (Alajeró), inter-island flights only. Long-haul flights via Tenerife
- Suits: remote workers, retirees, nature lovers and hikers
- Difficult for: job seekers, families who want an international school, anyone with a tight housing budget and little time
Who is La Gomera right for?
- Good: remote workers and freelancers who have clients in Germany or Austria and are looking for peace and quiet.
- Good: retirees who value a mild climate and a manageable environment and can live with trips to Tenerife.
- Good: people who hike, live outdoors and are looking for nature around the Garajonay National Park.
- Good: if you want to connect with a German-speaking community, you will find it mainly in Valle Gran Rey.
- Less suitable: if you need a permanent job on the island outside tourism and hospitality.
- Less suitable: families who want a German or international school.
- Less suitable: if you regularly need specialist doctors, shopping or the cultural life of a city.

Where to live?
| Area / town | Rent €/m² | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| San Sebastián de La Gomera | n/a | Ferry commuters, dealing with authorities, being close to the hospital |
| Valle Gran Rey | n/a | German-speaking community, beach, sunshine in the west |
| Hermigua | n/a | Green north, country life, peace and quiet |
| Vallehermoso | n/a | Seclusion, self-sufficient living, lots of space |
| Playa Santiago (Alajeró) | n/a | Being near the airport, sunny south, retirees |
Idealista currently publishes no rental figures for the municipalities on La Gomera because there are too few listings. That is exactly the main problem: long-term rentals are scarce, and many houses are holiday accommodation.
What does life cost?
| Item | Per month |
|---|---|
| Rent for a 2-room flat (approx. 70 m²) | approx. 1,070 € (provincial figure) |
| Utilities (electricity, water, internet) | 120 to 160 € |
| Groceries (1 person) | 300 to 350 € |
| Transport | 80 to 150 € (car, without ferry) |
| Total (1 person) | approx. 1,570 to 1,730 € |
The rent is calculated from Idealista’s provincial figure (15.3 € per m², September 2026) times 70; on the island, individual listings vary a lot. The rest is an estimate; more on this under cost of living in Spain.
Working
The economy depends mainly on tourism, hospitality, public administration and some agriculture. There are few permanent jobs, and without good Spanish they are hardly within reach. La Gomera is realistic for you if you bring your income with you: as a remote employee or as a freelancer. Check the internet connection at the address before you rent. In the Canary Islands, instead of the VAT known as IVA, there is a separate tax called IGIC; you will find the details under self-employed in the Canary Islands. In general: working in Spain and registering as an autónomo.
Everyday life: climate, health, schools, transport
- Climate: At the airport, the highs are around 21 °C in January and around 27 °C in August, and rain falls almost only from October to March (AEMET, 1991 to 2020). In the north and at higher altitudes it is much more humid and cloudy than on the south coast.
- Health: The public Hospital Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in San Sebastián provides basic care, plus health centres in the municipalities. Serious cases and many specialist appointments go through hospitals on Tenerife. More under health insurance.
- Schools: There are public primary and secondary schools on the island, but no German or international school. The nearest ones are on Tenerife. More under with your family.
- Transport: Fred. Olsen and Naviera Armas sail from Los Cristianos (Tenerife) to San Sebastián. There are buses, but they are infrequent, and the roads are winding: a car is practically a must.

Common mistakes
- Planning just a few weeks for the flat search, even though long-term rentals on the island are scarce.
- Signing a holiday rental contract that puts you back out on the street in spring.
- Planning without a car and underestimating the travel times on the winding roads.
- Not factoring in ferry costs and possible cancellations in rough seas if you often need to go to Tenerife.
Compare: Tenerife, El Hierro, La Palma or all the islands at a glance under Canary Islands.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a German-speaking community on La Gomera?
Yes, especially in Valle Gran Rey, where many Germans have lived or spent the winter for decades. For everyday dealings with authorities and landlords, you still need Spanish.
How do I get from Germany to La Gomera?
You fly to Tenerife South and take the ferry from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián. Alternatively, there are inter-island flights to La Gomera Airport.
Can I work as a freelancer on La Gomera?
Yes, as an autónomo (self-employed) with your residence on the island. You then charge IGIC instead of IVA, which is explained in the article self-employed in the Canary Islands.
