Moving to El Hierro: Costs, Housing, Work and Tips (2026)

By deinSpanien editorial team · Updated on 13.10.2026 · 6 min read

In short: El Hierro is the smallest inhabited Canary Island with its own airport, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with a very quiet everyday life and hardly any labour market. It suits you if you bring your own income and are looking for seclusion, not choice.

At a glance

  • Population: 12,040 on the whole island: Valverde 5,338, Frontera 4,660, El Pinar 2,042 (INE, as of 1.1.2025)
  • Rent: no island figure, Idealista publishes no data for El Hierro. For comparison, province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 15.3 € per m² (Idealista, September 2026)
  • Purchase price: no island figure. Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 3,514 € per m² (Idealista, September 2026)
  • Climate: on the coast 21.1 °C annual average, around 206 mm of rain and 2,382 hours of sunshine a year (AEMET, El Hierro airport station, 1981 to 2010)
  • Airport: Aeropuerto de El Hierro near Valverde, inter-island flights only. Long-haul flights via Tenerife
  • Who it suits: remote workers, retirees, divers, people who want maximum peace and quiet
  • Difficult for: job seekers, young singles, families who want an international school

Who is El Hierro right for?

  • Good: remote workers and self-employed people with clients in Germany or Austria who want peace and quiet to work.
  • Good: retirees looking for a mild climate and a very small, manageable environment.
  • Good: divers and nature lovers who want the sea, lava landscapes and hiking trails right on their doorstep.
  • Good: if you take sustainability seriously and find an island with its own wind and water power plant exciting.
  • Less so: if you are looking for a job locally, because the labour market is tiny.
  • Less so: if you need nightlife, culture or a wide choice when shopping.
  • Less so: if you regularly need specialists, because many treatments go through Tenerife.

Where to live?

Neighbourhood / town Rent €/m² Suits
Valverde n/a authorities, hospital, airport and port nearby
Tigaday (Frontera) n/a life in the Valle de El Golfo, supermarkets, farming
La Frontera / Valle de El Golfo n/a families, hikers, houses with a garden
La Restinga (El Pinar) n/a divers, sea views, fishing village in the south
Taibique (El Pinar) n/a peace and quiet, pine forest, rural everyday life

Idealista publishes no rent figures for the municipalities on El Hierro because there are too few listings. So expect suitable long-term rentals to come up rarely and go quickly.

What does life cost?

Item Per month
Rent for a 2-room flat (approx. 70 m²) approx. 1,070 € (province figure)
Utilities (electricity, water, internet) 120 to 160 €
Groceries (1 person) 300 to 350 €
Transport 80 to 150 € (car, excluding ferry)
Total (1 person) approx. 1,570 to 1,730 €

Rent is calculated from the Idealista province figure (15.3 € per m², September 2026) times 70 and on the island is often lower or higher, depending on supply. An example: in September 2026 the cheapest listing in Valverde was 590 € for around 44 m² (Atlántico Hoy). The rest is an estimate, more in Cost of living in Spain.

Working

Most jobs are in public administration, health and education, plus farming in the Valle de El Golfo, fishing and a small tourism sector with dive centres in La Restinga. Without very good Spanish and contacts you will hardly find anything. El Hierro is realistic for you with a remote job or as a self-employed person with clients off the island. Instead of IVA, in the Canary Islands you charge IGIC, see Self-employed in the Canary Islands. In general: Working in Spain and Registering as an autónomo.

Everyday life: climate, health, schools, transport

  • Climate: at the airport highs are around 21 °C in January and around 26.5 °C in September, and it rains mainly from October to February (AEMET, 1981 to 2010). Valverde lies higher up inland and is cooler and more often foggy than the coast.
  • Health: the public Hospital Insular Nuestra Señora de los Reyes in Valverde covers basic care, plus health centres in the municipalities. For many specialist treatments and serious cases you go to Tenerife. More in Health insurance.
  • Schools: there are public primary and secondary schools, but no German or international school. The nearest ones are on Tenerife. More in with your family.
  • Transport: Fred. Olsen and Naviera Armas connect Los Cristianos (Tenerife) with the port of La Estaca near Valverde. Buses run rarely, so a car is practically a must.

First steps on the ground

  1. Apply for your NIE

You apply for the NIE with the Policía Nacional via Cita previa; an appointment on Tenerife is often quicker to get. Guide

  2. Find a flat

Besides portals, notices, Facebook groups and asking around locally help, because many flats are never put online. Guide

  3. Register at the town hall

You do the Padrón at the Ayuntamiento de Valverde, de La Frontera or de El Pinar, depending on where you live. Guide

  4. Open a bank account

There are only a few branches, so plan an account you can mostly manage online. Guide

  5. Health card

You get the Servicio Canario de la Salud card through your health centre as soon as you are insured. Guide

Typical mistakes

  • Moving in after a summer holiday without having experienced autumn and winter with fog in Valverde.
  • Hoping for a local job instead of bringing your income with you.
  • Searching for a flat only online, even though a lot happens through contacts.
  • Not planning for doctor’s appointments, official errands and shopping on Tenerife, including the ferry and an overnight stay.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Germany to El Hierro?

Usually you fly to Tenerife and from there take an inter-island flight or the ferry from Los Cristianos to La Estaca. There are no direct flights from Germany.

Is El Hierro really supplied with renewable energy?

The Gorona del Viento power plant combines wind turbines with pumped storage and at times covers the island’s entire electricity demand. On an annual average, however, diesel generators still run as well.

Can I work on El Hierro as a self-employed person?

Yes, as an autónomo with residence on the island. You then charge IGIC instead of IVA, details in the article Self-employed in the Canary Islands.
