Best time to visit Andalusia: month by month

By deinSpanien editorial team · Updated on 01.10.2026 · 4 min read

In short: For cities like Seville, Córdoba and Granada, March to May and October and November are the best time. For swimming, June to September works, and on the coast often October too. In July and August the interior is very hot; in winter the coast is mild and Granada sees frost at night.

At a glance

  • City break: March to May, October and November
  • Beach: June to September
  • Hiking: spring and autumn
  • Skiing in the Sierra Nevada: roughly December to April
  • Quietest and cheapest: November to February, except over Christmas

How warm is it when? The climate table

Andalusia does not have a single climate. The coast stays moderate all year, the Guadalquivir valley with Seville and Córdoba heats up a lot in summer, and Granada sits high up and has cold nights. The table shows the average daily maximum and the average nightly minimum in degrees Celsius.

Source: AEMET, normal values for the period 1981 to 2010, stations Sevilla Aeropuerto, Málaga Aeropuerto and Granada Aeropuerto (560 m). These are averages: individual summer days inland are well above 40 degrees. AEMET has since also published normal values for 1991 to 2020.

When does it rain?

Rain falls almost exclusively between October and April, usually in short, heavy showers with sunny days in between. In Seville and Málaga, November and December are the wettest months with around 90 to 100 mm each, spread over roughly six to seven rainy days. In July it practically never rains.

Over the year, Seville and Málaga get around 535 mm, Granada 365 mm and Almería only 200 mm. That makes the southeast around the Cabo de Gata the safest bet if you are looking for sun in winter. The exception in the other direction is the Sierra de Grazalema, one of the rainiest corners of Spain.

Month by month

Every season has its own reason for a trip. This is how the year breaks down:

  • January and February: on the coast often sunny during the day at 16 to 18 degrees, cold nights inland. Few crowds, cheap accommodation. Carnaval takes place in Cádiz.
  • March: the orange trees are in blossom, ideal temperatures for cities. In 2027, Semana Santa runs from 21 to 28 March.
  • April: warm, but with the most rainy days of the spring. Around the ferias, Seville is packed and expensive.
  • May: for many the best month: long days, around 25 degrees, the Patios in Córdoba and the flower crosses in Granada.
  • June: beach season starts, and inland it already gets hot at over 30 degrees.
  • July and August: the coast is crowded, and inland cities are only bearable early in the morning and in the evening.
  • September: the sea is at its warmest, and the Spanish school holidays are over.
  • October and November: pleasant for cities and hikes, first rainy days.
  • December: Christmas lights in Málaga, start of the ski season.

The dates of the big festivals are listed under Festivals in Andalusia.

Which time suits which plan?

It is best to decide based on what you want to do, not on the calendar.

  • Road trip: April, May or October. You will find a ready-made route under Andalusia road trip.
  • Beach: June and September are more pleasant than August. The water in the Mediterranean is warmer than on the Costa de la Luz.
  • Hiking: in the Alpujarras and around Ronda in spring and autumn, in the high Sierra Nevada in summer.
  • Skiing: according to media reports, the 2026/27 season is planned from 28.11.2026 to 25.04.2027, depending on snow. More under Sierra Nevada.
  • With children: Easter and autumn holidays, see Andalusia with kids.
Tip: If you travel in high summer, base yourself on the coast and do the cities as day trips with an early start. In Málaga the average daily maximum stays at around 31 degrees even in August, five degrees below Seville.

If you want to spend the whole winter somewhere warm, the islands are a better choice, see Wintering in the Canary Islands.

Frequently asked questions

When is Andalusia cheapest?

From November to February, except over Christmas and New Year. Flights and accommodation then usually cost considerably less than in spring and summer.

Can you swim in winter?

Hardy people do, but the sea is cold then. On sunny days it is almost always warm enough for a beach walk in a T-shirt.

Is Seville doable in August?

Yes, but only if you adapt your day: sightseeing before 12 noon, a long lunch break, back out in the evening. Any other month is more pleasant.

Do I need warm clothes in winter?

In Granada, Ronda and inland, yes: nights there drop to around zero degrees. Many flats are poorly heated, so ask your accommodation.
