In short: Jaén is the cheapest university city in Andalusia: a room in a shared flat cost 245 euros on average at the start of 2026, and a year of a Grado (bachelor’s degree) costs 757.20 euros (as of October 2026). You get your place at the Universidad de Jaén with the certificate from UNEDasiss through the central Andalusian application procedure. In return, you live in a small, quiet inland city where you won’t get far without Spanish.

The Universidad de Jaén: two sites, short distances

The Universidad de Jaén (UJA) is a young public university, founded in 1993. The Times Higher Education ranking lists it with around 13,600 students, 11 percent of them from abroad. Unlike in Granada or Seville, almost everything here is in one place.

Campus Las Lagunillas in Jaén

The main campus is in the north of the city and is a self-contained site: lecture halls, library, canteen, sports facilities and administration within walking distance. It is home to the faculties of humanities and education, social and legal sciences, natural sciences (Ciencias Experimentales), health sciences and social work, plus the Escuela Politécnica Superior with the engineering subjects.

Campus Científico-Tecnológico in Linares

Linares is a separate town north of Jaén. Its campus hosts the UJA’s second technical school, offering mining, telecommunications and industrial engineering among others. If you study there, you also live there: commuting daily from Jaén is impractical. When you apply, each site is a separate entry, so look carefully.

Focus areas and language of instruction

The university itself lists more than 40 degree programmes. The region shapes the research: the province is the largest olive growing area in the world, so topics around olive oil, agriculture and energy are very present. For years, the health subjects have been in the highest demand among applicants, especially nursing and physiotherapy.

The language of instruction is Spanish. The UJA has its own catalogue of courses in other languages, mainly in English. It is aimed primarily at exchange students and is no substitute for studying in Spanish. We have not found evidence of a fixed requirement for a Spanish certificate for admission to a Grado in Andalusia, but realistically you need B2. In Jaén, on top of that, hardly anyone switches to English in everyday life either. To graduate, you have to prove a foreign language at B1 level, as everywhere in Andalusia.

Admission with the Abitur or Matura

Places are not allocated by the UJA, but by the Distrito Único Andaluz, the joint procedure of the public universities in Andalusia. You apply in the general quota, together with the Spanish school leavers.

  1. Have your school leaving qualification converted

UNEDasiss, an office of the distance learning university UNED, issues you the Acreditación: the certificate that converts your Abitur or Matura grade to the Spanish scale of up to 10. In 2026 you could apply for it from 4 February to 1 December.

  2. PCE only if necessary

The admission grade (nota de admisión) goes up to 14. You can only get above 10 with the PCE subject exams. In many UJA degree programmes places remain free or the bar is low, and then your converted school grade is enough. For nursing and physiotherapy you should plan on the PCE.

  3. Application in June

In 2026 the ordinary phase ran from 11 to 22 June. You submit one application and rank your choices in it, across several universities too. The order is binding.

  4. Allocation and further rounds

First allocation on 3 July, second on 16 July, then further rounds until 8 October (2026 dates). There was an extraordinary phase in July and a round for remaining places at the end of September.

The nota de corte is the grade of the last applicant who got a place the previous year. We don’t give current figures for the UJA because we could not verify them from an official list. You’ll find them in the Distrito Único Andaluz portal and at the university’s admissions service. The dates for 2027/28 had not yet been published in October 2026. How UNEDasiss, the PCE and the grade calculation work in detail is explained in the guide Studying in Spain.

Tip: Don’t just put Jaén at the end of your list as a fallback. Because the order is binding, you always get the highest choice your grade is enough for. Think honestly beforehand about whether the subject or the city matters more to you.

Costs, reduction and paying in instalments

Prices are the same throughout Andalusia and have been stable since 2023/24. So Jaén doesn’t differ in fees, but in everything else.

  • Grado: 12.62 euros per ECTS for the first enrolment, 757.20 euros for 60 ECTS. If you repeat a course, you pay 25.25 euros per ECTS.
  • Máster: 13.68 euros per ECTS, professional qualification master’s programmes 12.62 euros.
  • Administration: 59.10 euros for opening your student file, 5.70 euros for the student card.
  • 99 percent reduction: from the second year, the Junta waives 99 percent of the cost of credits you passed at the first attempt in the previous year. To get it, you submit a declaration when you enrol.

You can pay in one go, in two or in up to eight instalments. The UJA publishes the dates every year in its calendar of deadlines. In 2026/27 the first instalment was due within two working days of enrolment, the next on 31 October and the rest on the 15th of each month from November to April.

For funding from home: Auslands-BAföG (German state student funding for studying abroad) is also available for a full degree in Spain, and the responsible office is the Studierendenwerk Heidelberg. Austria funds a full degree abroad through the Mobilitätsstipendium (mobility grant).

Enrolment on site

After the allocation you only have a short window for the matrícula (enrolment): in 2026, after the first list, it was 3 to 9 July. Enrolment is online, and you present the documents afterwards. Have these ready:

  • ID card or passport
  • Acreditación from UNEDasiss and school leaving certificate
  • IBAN for paying in instalments
  • Declaration for the 99 percent reduction

The university gives you the exact list with your admission. Useful to know: in 2026/27 you could change courses from 5 to 7 October for the first semester, and full cancellation was possible until 15 December. New international students can also use the UJA’s buddy programme. It is free and helps in the first few weeks with finding a room, enrolment and the university’s online platforms.

Housing for several years

This is where Jaén plays its biggest trump card. Idealista reports an asking price of 8.3 euros per square metre for whole flats in the city in September 2026. That is the lowest figure among the eight Andalusian provincial capitals and works out at around 581 euros for 70 square metres. Compared with the previous year, the price rose by only 0.3 percent.

Rooms in shared flats cost 245 euros on average in the first quarter of 2026. According to Idealista, that was the cheapest figure of all Spanish provincial capitals, while the national average was 430 euros.

Where to live?

  • Around the campus and the Avenida de Madrid: newer apartment blocks in the north, a few minutes’ walk to the university. This is where most students live.
  • Centre around the Paseo de la Estación: shops, bars, the railway station, about 15 to 25 minutes’ walk to the campus.
  • Old town below the cathedral: prettier and often even cheaper, but on a slope and further away. The way home is uphill.

Shared flat, your own flat or a residence

At these prices, a small flat of your own in Jaén is affordable for some, which would hardly be conceivable in Málaga. Most people still share, if only for the social contacts. For people who want meals and community, the UJA lists several residences: Domingo Savio right on the Las Lagunillas campus, plus Cardenal Merino, Paraninfo and Josefa Segovia in the city. The university also mentions its own apartments with a limited number of places. It doesn’t publish prices centrally, so ask the residences directly. For private rooms, the same applies as everywhere: view first, then pay, see Finding a flat in Spain.

Monthly budget

The room price is verified. All other rows are estimated ranges for a frugal to normal life in a shared flat.

Item Amount per month Basis
Room in a shared flat around 245 euros Idealista, Q1 2026
Bills and internet (share) 40 to 70 euros Estimate
Groceries 170 to 230 euros Estimate
Mobile 5 to 15 euros Estimate
Leisure and travel 80 to 160 euros Estimate
Total around 540 to 720 euros Estimate

Heating costs in winter can push the bills up noticeably. How the items compare in other cities is shown in Cost of living in Spain.

Working while you study

As an EU citizen you can work without a permit, but you need an NIE and a social security number. To be honest, Jaén is a difficult place for it: the city is small, there is little tourism and few companies looking for German speakers. Realistic options are tutoring, language teaching and remote jobs, for example customer service in your native language. The upside: with these living costs, even a small side income goes a long way. More under Working in Spain.

Transport and getting there

In Jaén you hardly need any transport in everyday life. Campus and centre are around 20 minutes apart on foot, there are city buses, and there is no metro. Current fares and student passes are available from the city bus operator; we don’t have verified prices. The city is hilly, so cycling plays a smaller role than in flat cities. If you are under 26, check the state Abono Único for 30 euros a month for travel around Andalusia (as of 2026); it is valid on regional trains and state long distance buses.

Getting there from Germany or Austria takes time. Granada-Jaén airport is near Granada and has few international connections. Most people fly to Málaga or Madrid and continue by bus or train. For flights home over Christmas, you should allow a whole day of travel.

Life in Jaén, with the honest downside

Jaén lies on a hillside below the Santa Catalina castle, with a mighty Renaissance cathedral in the centre and olive groves as far as the eye can see. There are hardly any tourists, prices are those paid by locals, and as in Granada a tapa comes with your drink. For days off, the World Heritage towns of Úbeda and Baeza and the Sierra de Cazorla in the east of the province are worth a visit. You can reach Granada by bus in a little over an hour, and tips for it are under Granada sights.

You should take the downsides seriously before committing to three or four years. Jaén is quiet, the nightlife is small and the international community is limited. There is no sea, the summers are very hot and the winter nights cold. Many Spanish students go home to their families in the villages of the province at weekends, and then the city is noticeably emptier. And after graduation there are few jobs locally.

Paperwork for a degree lasting several years

If you’re staying several years, you should sort out the basics in the first semester. In a small city like Jaén, appointments with the authorities are often easier to get than in the big cities.

  • NIE: you need the foreigner identification number for work, many contracts and dealings with the authorities. Step by step: Applying for an NIE.
  • Padrón: registration at the town hall proves your place of residence. How it works: Empadronamiento.
  • Bank account: legally, an IBAN from home is enough for instalments and rent. A Spanish account with Bizum makes everyday life easier: Opening a bank account.
  • Health insurance: the EHIC covers necessary treatment in the public system. Before you move, talk to your health insurer about cover during a full degree abroad. Overview: Health insurance in Spain.

Frequently asked questions

Is it easier to get a place in Jaén than in Granada?

In many subjects yes, because demand is lower. That doesn’t apply to nursing and physiotherapy, where the bar is high in Jaén too. Compare the notas de corte of both universities in the Distrito Único Andaluz portal.

What does a year of study in Jaén cost in total?

757.20 euros in fees in the first year, plus living costs. With a room in a shared flat for around 245 euros, monthly budgets of about 540 to 720 euros are realistic. The room price is verified, the rest is an estimate.

Can I pay the fees in instalments?

Yes, in up to eight instalments. The dates are in the UJA’s calendar of deadlines; in 2026/27 they fell between enrolment and 15 April.

Jaén or Linares: where will I study?

That depends on the degree programme. Most subjects are on the Las Lagunillas campus in Jaén, some of the engineering subjects in Linares. The site is shown in the list of degree programmes in the application portal.

Can I study in English in Jaén?

No, not a full degree. There are individual courses in English, but the regular degree programmes are taught in Spanish.

Is there help for new international students?

Yes. The UJA has a Welcome Center on the Las Lagunillas campus and a free buddy programme in which Spanish students accompany you in the first few weeks.
